How do I enable closed captioning?
Watching with someone who prefers the closed caption turned off? Not a problem! Just follow these steps to manage your closed captioning settings:
iOS Mobile Phone or iPad
- Select the show you want to watch
- Tap the screen to play the show
- Navigate the closed captioning button in the top right-hand corner of the screen
- Tap the closed captioning icon to turn on subtitles
- Tap the closed captioning icon again if you would like to turn off subtitles
Desktop/Laptop
- Select a show you want to watch
- Click “Play”
- Hover mouse over the progress bar located at the bottom of your screen
- Navigate to the closed captioning icon on the left side of the progress bar
- Click the closed captioning icon and select “English” to turn on subtitles
- Click the closed captioning icon again if you want to turn off subtitles
AppleTV:
If you want to turn on CC, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning. Choose "Closed Captions" to turn it on.
ROKU
ROKU closed captions can be activated from the settings of your Roku device.
- Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
- Scroll up or down and select Settings.
- To open the captions menu, select Accessibility. If Accessibility is not listed, select Captions.
- Select Captions mode and choose when captions appear.
- Note: The "On mute" selection is not available on all Roku devices.
- Off – captions never appear
- On always – captions always appear (when available from the service provider). When service providers use their own settings, closed captions are activated within their channels.
- On replay – captions appear only after pressing the Replay button on your Roku remote (with content that supports instant replay)
- On mute – captions appear only when the volume is muted.
- Note: The "On mute" selection is not available on all Roku devices.
AMAZON Prime Video
To watch Prime Video movies and TV shows with subtitles:
- Start playing the video.
- Press the Menu button on your Fire TV remote or the Fire TV Remote App.
- Select Subtitles and Audio.
- Select the Off button under Subtitles and Captions. Then select an available subtitle language from the options on-screen to turn captions on.
Tip: You can then set preferences for the way subtitles display, including text size and style. You'll see a sample of your selected options on-screen.
- Press the Menu button again to return to video playback with subtitles on.
To turn subtitles off, press the Menu button, re-open Subtitles and Audio, and select your currently enabled captions option. You'll then see an option to set subtitles to Off.
